Below are links to our online editions of our club newsletter. This is the
same exact format as what is mailed out to our members. These documents are in
Adobe Acrobat format.
WARNING: These documents are somewhat large (About 350 Kb in size).
With a 56K modem connecting at top speed it will take about 2 minutes to
download the newsletter. NOTE: You may see that the document is done
loading, but still see no newsletter. This is because the Adobe Acrobat Reader
is loading the file when you click on the link and not your web browser.

How did we get our newsletter into PDF format?
As a club with not too
much in the ole bank account, purchasing Adobe Acrobat was really not an option
for us and HTML would probably not do our newsletter justice (plus converting it
to HTML would be an extra step of the already busy people who handle the
newsletter and the webpage). So we took the open source way as many people do
when the cost of a product is too high.
We looked around and happened to find this solution:
- Our newsletter editor uses Microsoft Publisher to write the newsletter.
(Ok, we are using a Microsoft product here, but our newsletter editor already
had it and was quite familiar with it)
- Define a Postscript printer (even if you don't own one) and set it up to
print to FILE: (not LPT1:). In this case we set up an Apple LaserWriter
II NT.
- Next print the newsletter to the Postscript "printer". This process
saves it to a file as Postscript.
- Now here is the open source part... Download and install GSView and Ghostscript. Open the Postscript
file and do a File -> Convert to PDF format.
