Sports lighting does not have to be intrusive |
We do not recommend Musco Lighting for sports lighting (the same company that installed the ones at the Rampage field). What we REALLY recommend are true full cutoff fixtures from Soft Lighting Systems. Example images from a field lit with these lights is shown below:

Note the difference in glare (the light coming directly from the light bulb) from the Musco lights (shown below).
Compare the images that we took on the previous page and after the shields were installed to one taken for promotional purposes at the Musco site: This image is on Musco's web site at http://www.musco.com/projshow/project.php?id=322+softball.
To quote from Musco:
"Advanced technology provides solutions for meeting extreme environmental light restrictions
"Musco technology offers a solution for lighting projects with severe restrictions on spill, glare and sky glow.
"With Total Light Control (TLC), Musco can meet strict spill and glare light requirements for lighting projects near residential areas, airports or observatories.
"Musco's Total Light Control option controls up to 95% of spill and glare light while still achieving required light levels and providing efficient, uniform light on the field."
Since they already bought into Musco, we requested that the Milwaukee Rampage install the Total Light Control option to their lights to cut down on the light trespass. It is interesting that the cutoffs make little difference to the light tresspass and, in our opinion, do not work as advertised.
The Milwaukee Rampage installed the Level-8 Enhanced environmental light control option, which is one step down from the TLC option. What we found is that these shields don't do much for the surrounding area, but only limit UPWARD spill of light. It is like putting a piece of cardboard horizontally over a light bulb.
